Virtual D-Pad on the left is responsible for the movement of the hero, the right button attacks / actions, which appear only when you need / can use them. The game is divided into small locations - go to the edge of one and the next location is loaded, and quite quickly if not instantly.

Pass the first part can be a couple of hours, but you have to try, especially if not maintained at every step.
